From Rainforest to Reef: My Experience Aboard Galaxy Zibó in Costa Rica

Updated: May 8

Costa Rica, often referred to as the “Rich Coast,” was named by the Spaniards due to their belief that the coast and mountains were abundant in gold. However, they were mistaken; the true treasure lay in the country’s stunning flora and fauna, not the precious metal.

The Galaxy Zibó, a new addition to Galaxy’s fleet, serves as the ideal luxurious home base for meticulously planned daily excursions. These excursions allow guests to immerse themselves in the rich culture, explore the lush rainforests, venture into the serene mangroves, or visit the protected reefs and national parks. Twenty-five percent of the land in Costa Rica is protected from development. Their National Park system is truly impressive.

The Zibó is a well-appointed yacht equipped with all the amenities necessary for a luxurious cruising experience. It boasts spacious cabins that can accommodate up to 10 guests.

The Deluxe cabin offers two marble and tiled bathrooms, one of which features a walk-in shower and the other a jacuzzi tub. A king-size bed, a cozy sitting area, a vanity, and ample storage provide the perfect space for a couple or a family with young children. Each guest cabin is equipped with marble and tiled bathrooms, a rain shower over the jacuzzi tub, queen or twin beds, and plenty of storage. Eco-friendly soaps, shampoo, and conditioner are provided.

The main cabin and lounge are climate-controlled. The main cabin is elegantly designed with comfortable couches, marble tables, dining chairs, a bar, and a piano. The lounge features additional couches and chairs, a large screen TV, and games. Netflix is available, but even during rainy weather, the show is outdoors!

The Zibó also includes a sun deck and a covered rear deck, both of which offer ample seating, lounging areas, and umbrellas. During our trip, we enjoyed a variety of water activities, including ocean kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, and a slide. The zodiac was particularly useful for snorkeling and our trip to Canó Island.

Safety was the top priority on board and off. Every water activity was meticulously overseen by the captain and crew, each of whom has lifeguard and EMS training. The crew anticipates your every need, which provides a truly special experience.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted with a refreshingly cold towel and freshly squeezed fruit juice, which became our daily routine after returning from any activity. We explored the boat, settled in, and were served the first of many delectable meals.

Our afternoon adventure took us to Barú Nature Preserve, where we swiftly spotted a Toucan and a Black Iguana. Our guide, Erick, expertly pointed out the first of many Sloths we would encounter. Throughout our two-hour hike in the jungle, Erick shared fascinating history and intriguing facts. We marveled at the sight of wild pigs, bats, Agoutis , and White-nosed Coati. We witnessed armies of Leaf-cutting ants and learned about their crucial role in the ecosystem. We also discovered the symbiotic relationship between plants and the insects that depend on them for survival.

After our exhilarating hike, we returned to the boat for a delightful three-course dinner. The evening was spent stargazing and observing fish and wildlife from the stern. The crew skillfully navigated to Drake Bay while we slept.

Our second day began with an early breakfast, followed by a trip to the Mangroves. We were picked up

in a flat-bottomed tour boat and traveled to the entrance of Drake Bay, then up Rio Sierpe. Once again, our guides proved to be experts. We spotted a variety of bird species, three species of monkeys, Tiger-faced crabs, Green iguanas, Caymans, an American Crocodile and a Sloth. After an exciting ride back to Galaxy Zibo, we were treated to another amazing lunch as the crew brought out their toys: sea kayaks, jet skis, a paddleboard, and a giant slide. The afternoon was spent enjoying the water.

At 4:30 pm, it was time for Coffee Time, a Tico tradition. We watched a breathtaking sunset before preparing for yet another fabulous meal. The evening was spent getting to know the other guests and crew members.

Early the next morning, we arrived at Canó Island. After a leisurely breakfast, we went snorkeling with a local guide who expertly pointed out various species of fish. We returned to Zibó for a refreshing break with delicious, freshly squeezed juice.

Our second snorkeling excursion revealed even more species of fish and Hawksbill sea turtles. Back on board, we enjoyed another delicious lunch before embarking on a zodiac trip to Canó Island. This protected island has only 140 tickets sold daily for snorkeling, diving, or visiting. There’s a ranger who resides on the island, and it’s home to only one trail that leads to an ancient burial ground.

On our final evening on board, we were treated to a tour of the bridge as we motored back to Drake Bay. Once anchored, we sipped cocktails with the other guests before heading topside for another breathtaking sunset and light show.
